How to Use Your Co-op Direct Membership

As a Co-op Direct member, welcome to a simpler, more affordable way to manage your health care! Health Access Cooperative—Direct for Individuals, or Co-op Direct, is built for people who want the peace of mind of knowing they can get support for major medical events without the high premiums and red tape of traditional insurance.

Here’s how your membership works and how to get the most out of it.

What’s Included in Your Co-op Direct Membership

Your membership gives you access to support for significant medical events, such as hospital stays, emergency room visits, surgeries, maternity care, and more. Co-op Direct is not insurance, but it functions similarly when it comes to covering large, unexpected costs.

Co-op Direct is designed to help you afford health care when it matters most. Use your membership for:

  • Emergency room visits
  • Hospital stays
  • Surgeries and procedures
  • Maternity care (prenatal, delivery, and postnatal)
  • Specialist visits for major diagnoses
  • Injuries requiring ongoing treatment
  • Mental health needs requiring inpatient care
  • Preventive mammograms and colon cancer screenings
  • Other eligible large, unexpected medical expenses

Your Co-op Direct membership also includes access to our Prescription Service. Learn more here.

How to Use It

  1. Get the Care You Need. Visit the provider of your choice as a self-pay patient and explain that you’re a member of a health care cost-sharing cooperative. If you know about the medical incident in advance, such as a planned surgery, you should let our member support team know as soon as possible to coordinate payment.
  2. Pay Your Per-Incident Deductible. You’re responsible for the first part of the cost for a medical incident. This may be $1,000, $2,500, or $4,000, based on your selection when you signed up.
  3. Enjoy Peace of Mind! With Co-op Direct, you will only be responsible for two per-incident deductibles per year. You will also benefit from an annual out-of-pocket maximum for expenses that aren’t a part of a medical incident.
