Three Benefits of NOT Using Insurance at the Pharmacy

Your Health Access Benefit includes a prescriptions service that gives you access to some of the lowest-priced prescription medication in the country. Not sure how to use your prescriptions service? Learn more here.

Remember, your Health Access Benefit isn’t insurance, and that's a good thing—especially when you need to get a prescription from a pharmacy. With insurance, you’ll often have to pay a copay when you fill a prescription, and you usually won’t know how much that copay will be before you arrive at the pharmacy. And when you find out how much the copay will be, there is nothing you can do to lower that cost!

With your Health Access Benefit, you’re in charge of your health care spending. You are empowered to find the lowest prices, and you'll know exactly how much you’ll pay before you pick up your prescription at a pharmacy.

That’s so freeing! But that’s not the end of the good news. Here are three more ways that visits to a pharmacy can be better without an insurance company.

Pharmacy Pricing is Less Confusing

There is a funny commercial where a man goes to a pharmacy to buy diabetes test strips and an employee tries to help him figure out what they will cost him with his insurance. It’s comedic, and confusing, but they can’t figure it out. The frustrated customer then asks how much it would cost to buy the same product over-the-counter without insurance, and the employee knows the cost off the top of her head. Buying the product without insurance “may be a better option,” she concludes.

Interestingly, this commercial is paid for by the company making the diabetes test strips because even they know that using insurance to buy their product is complicated and confusing!

This is true for most over-the-counter products you may need to buy at a pharmacy. Buying what you need without insurance is going to be easier and will make pricing less confusing.

You Can Use Coupons at the Pharmacy

There are many apps out there that will help you find coupons to save money on prescriptions, including GoodRx and Pharmacy Checker. Some members have even reported that they save money on prescriptions through rewards programs with companies such as CVS or Sam’s Club.

You’re in control of your health care spending with your Health Access Benefit, meaning you can use any coupons or membership deals that you can find to save even more money.

You Can Shop Around, or Shop from Home

Because your prescriptions are filled through Drexi, a pharmacy benefit manager with over 65,000 locations, you can shop around for the best price or the most convenient location. That’s way more options than you would get with an insurance company and their network restrictions!

The best price or easiest fulfillment option for you may even be one of their many international pharmacies that can mail your prescriptions directly to your house. Access to Drexi is included in your Health Access Benefit at no additional cost to you.

Shopping for your health care needs at a pharmacy without insurance is easier, less complicated, and may even save you more money. This is just one of the many ways your Health Access Benefit is designed to keep you and your family healthy!
