How to Make Your Preventive Reimbursements Work for You

Your Health Access Benefit can give you more control over your health and your health care costs in 2022! Through your preventive care service, you can get reimbursed for a wide range of preventive medical services such as dental cleanings, vision exams, flu shots, labs, screenings, and more! In fact, dozens of preventive services are available for 100% reimbursement up to $3,750 annually, effective in January 2022. Learn more about how to file for reimbursement and find the complete list of reimbursement maximums and eligible services here.

You may be wondering how to make the most of those funds, particularly when some preventive services (such as mammograms, colonoscopies, and certain lab tests) can cost significantly more than others (such as flu shots, dental cleanings, and gym memberships). Here are three tips to help you make the most of your preventive reimbursements each year!

Shop Around for the Best Deals

You want to keep your family healthy, and we make it easy with no network restrictions for your preventive care benefit. You are free to visit any lab or doctor you’d like for included services and you’ll be reimbursed. This means that you can shop around to find the best prices on your preventive services to stretch your reimbursement dollars further.

For example, your Health Access Benefit covers a combined $250 per year for preventive vision and dental exams, and our members love getting reimbursed for their preventive visits! We recently shared Jason’s story about how he found the best prices for his annual vision and dental exams. Since his total expenses were under $250, Jason qualified for 100% reimbursement of preventive care. That means HAS reimbursed him the entire cost of both his vision exam and dental visit!

Like Jason, you can get the most value out of your Health Access Benefit by comparing prices at different locations. If Jason hadn’t shopped around, just one of those visits could have easily used up all of his reimbursement amount, leaving him to pay the bill for the other.

You never know what services you may need later in the year, so be sure to shop around for the best deals on your preventive services now.

Save Money as a Cash Pay Patient

Being a cash pay patient means that you are in control of your health care spending! There are no middlemen and no surprise charges, which allows you to get the lowest possible rates. As a cash pay patient, you tell the medical office that the services will be paid for directly—no insurance company will be involved—which allows you to get the lowest possible rates.

Almost all medical offices offer a discount for cash pay patients since they won’t have to deal with the hassle of billing an insurance company. If they don’t voluntarily offer a cash pay discount, be sure to ask for one.

Jason not only had 100% of preventive care services reimbursed, but he also saved an additional 25% off the standard insurance rates on his dental and vision exams by being a cash pay patient. As you shop around for the best prices, ask if they offer a discount to cash pay patients. That’s the kind of financial freedom you can receive, thanks to your Health Access Benefit!

Ask Your Primary Care Provider for Help

You already enjoy direct access to your own primary care provider through your Health Access Benefit. Having a primary care provider is the key to your total health solution. Your provider can help you manage ongoing health conditions, prescribe medication, send orders for labs and imaging, and much more. Not only will your primary care provider keep you and your family healthier, but they will save you money on health care costs over time.

We regularly hear stories from members about how their direct primary care provider helped them find world-class care at affordable prices!

  • One member in Cleveland, Ohio, relied on his primary care provider to find an affordable imaging center to perform a CT scan. His provider searched all over the region to find a location that saved him over $500! Even though he drove 40 minutes to this facility, he commented that it was “very nice” and would “recommend it for other patients who need imaging.” Read more of his money-saving story here.
  • A family trusted their primary care provider to refer their son to the best physical therapist and to an office for x-ray imaging. They ended up saving hundreds of dollars and said, “Without a doubt, this was the best health care experience our family has ever had!” Read their inspiring story here.
  • Another family utilized their direct primary care provider to save hundreds of dollars on lab work via our partnership with Ulta Lab Tests. Read about their savings here.
